Painting Cats

Sam And Ella
'Sam and Ella'
oil on cradled ply.
255 x 505 mm
Sold

These sisters are prima donnas to each other as well as the rest of the world. I accepted the commission knowing it was going to be challenging. Loads of sketches and photos later and I feel that I have their relationship to each other nailed in this painting.

Second Pass

Second Pass

This is the second pass on 'Jim's Family'. All looking very pale still as I am putting the under-painting into place. I am adjusting structure and I am unsure how to deal with the shirring on Sarah's top. Painting is all about problem solving.

Under painting of the flesh

Under painting of the flesh

This is the under painting of the flesh with a little bit drawing in oil on the figures. They look very pale because the glazing of colour will darken the darks. I am very happy with the composition of the figures. It is not traditional but does show this family's liveliness.

The Beginning

Jim's Family

Whilst I wait for the cat painting to dry enough to do more painting I have made a start on 'Jim's Family'.  It's on a 40 z 60 cm extra fine grained, oil primed canvas. I have transfer the drawing on to the canvas with graphite and you can now see the start of the underpainting.

At he back of the shop is the key cutting station. Here you can see many key blanks hanging against coded fluorescent green and red card. Here is the intriguing idea of 'potential' ... these are cyphers to an unknown future. It felt right to scratch the key shapes through to the scarlet undertoned panel.

This panel is small enogh to post to a loved one. It will be available to see during Artweeks at the Evenlode DIY, in Eynsham from the 18 to 27 of May.

This panel is very textured with paint. I was striving to achieve a sculptured  feel to the screws. They are piled higgety piggety in red boxes where you have the rare opportunity to buy one or many and not forced to buy by the box load.

This oil panel is small enough to post to a friend in an envelope. It will be available to see during Artweeks at the Evenlode DIY, in Eynsham from the 18 to 27 of May

Under Painting of Jim

Under painting of Jim

The under painting allows me to slowly develop the portrait by solving the the process step by step. Here I have looked only at values; light and shadow relationship. The red of the background is acting as the middle value between dark and light. I achieved this by wiping out the paint where needed achieving soft or lost edges. The paint needs to dry now before I procede which I think will take about 7 to 10 days.

'Lost Landscapes'
Exhibition curated by the Oxford Committee of the Campaign to Protect Rural England

Local artists were invited to produce a piece of work in response to some of the green spaces that have been earmarked for development by the City Council – Barton Village Nature Park, the disused allotments at East Minchery Farm, Littlemore Park, the BMW Horspath site, Barton Road cricket ground, Jesus and Lincoln College playing fields, and the Oxford University Press sports ground. Nine artists were chosen from open submission by a selection panel which included Helen Statham, manager of the O3 Gallery in Oxford Castle.

A toast for our Queen's Diamond Jubilee year. The pewter tankard is carried by every Morris man for his share of the beer. Dancing is thirsty work. Any guesses as to who's tankard?

Then made this sketch:

This  is my first attempt at painting not only on the front but also the sides. What do you think?

This wooden panel was a gift from my friend Graham of the Cuckoo's Nest
