May Day Morris-2

May Day Morris-2

This is the right hand side of my diptych of Eynsham Morris Line up. The next step is to shape welding with watercolour and then drawing with ink.

I am now a fan of Koh-I-Noor 1900 Toson D'Or graphite pencils. I had no problems with leads broken in the pencils and it erased with minimum smudging.

May Day Morris

May Day Morris 1

This is four days work and the mapping of the image is just about in place. It is amazingly difficult to draw this many people and keep their proportions and their relative sizes more or less right. The mark making is horrid but I hope my next pass will improve my lines. I will leave it for a while as I have just accepted a watercolour commission which needs a fast turn around.

Eynsham Morris; May 2014

Intial Drawing

It's been about 9 years since I drew a full line up of Eynsham Morris. Last time I drew them on a very large sheet of paper and paid for it to be mounted and framed. Lessons have been learned over the years ... do not paint large pictures unless commissioned!  I was lucky and it was purchased. So I planned this time to work to a standard pre-cut mounts and frame with ones from Amazon.

Drawing to size proved to be very difficult. It got easier as the drawing developed but the finished result is not nice. I am not the fastest worker but I decided to take the lessons learnt and start again. Sigh!

Study of Geoff Hogan for 'Stomp'

Drawing a value study allows me  to simlify my tones and stops me from cluttering the final painting with detail.

Stomp in Colour

I am still thinking of doing a larger oil painting of the Morris men. This study shows me that I am still getting bogged down in the local colour of things and not 'designing' the look.

Stomp

Stomp

Eynsham morris on the first day of dance in the morning when they are fresh and sober. I usually paint in watercolour and then ink but this time I have reversed the order. I wanted to explore the lighting of this scene and as a result this drawing has taken me HOURS! I may try out the colours I plan in Photoshop first as I am trying colours outside my comfort zone.

A toast for our Queen's Diamond Jubilee year. The pewter tankard is carried by every Morris man for his share of the beer. Dancing is thirsty work. Any guesses as to who's tankard?

Eynsham Morris Dance, Eynsham

Eynsham Morris Dancer,

Eynsham Morris Dancer
MDF, acrylic gesso, oil
10.2 x 10.2
Lorna Marrison

This was an experiment in oil painting on another surface. I got my local DIY to cut me some small square panels of MDF. I painted it with multiple layers of acrylic gesso on all sides: sanding finely between each layer. It was very smooth by the time I finished. The resulting surface was fabulous for drawing the image but was very slippy when painting. I am used to the drag of canvas and being able to scumble over the top of the grain leaving under painting showing through. I got fed up and left it on the shelf for some time. Some time later when between projects put a couch of oil onto a very dry surface and finished it. Conclusion: I like painting on canvas better.

I asked my friend Graham of the Cuckoo's Nest to frame it in the best way he saw fit. I always struggle when it comes to framing a painting. So it came as a delightful surprise when I saw the result. He took a small quite painting and put it under a dynamic spotlight floating it with in a raised mount with a warm dark frame. Thank you Graham!

Christmas Eve 2011
Eynsham Morris are, once again, playing a starring role in my Christmas cards. The first man on the left is Mark but I am unsure of the names of the other two ... answers in the comments please. The cards will be on sale during the Eynsham Art's Group 'Winter Exhibition', November 26 to December 4. Email me for larger orders.

Gabriel the Archangel

Gabriel the Archangel

'Gabriel, the Archangel'
30. x 25. cm
canvas, acrylic, oil,
Lorna Marrison

Still continuing my series of the sinners I now present Gabriel the Archangel played by a Eynsham Morris dancer. Gabriel is often painted as a mortal man. Traditionally he blows a horn to initiate the 'Last Judgement'. Here the accordion chord instead of calling for 'fresh men' sound the end of times. This chord is symbolised by the sound wave on the horizon. His body holds back the chaos.

The Sin of Pride is finished

Pride

'Pride'
30. x 25. cm
canvas, acrylic, oil

Pride is the desire to be more important or attractive then others.  This dance by the Armaleggan Morris shows them strutting like beautiful cockerels showing off their plumage to their hens. Morris dancers are serious attention seekers.

The Sin of Sloth is NOT Finished

Sloth

In preparing this image for blogging I realised that the painting and especially the hat needed some glazing. This is a example of how looking away for a while, looking through a mirror of photographing allows for a fresh perspective.

Sloth means spiritual or emotional apathy ... not just being lazy.
