Do I cheat?
Spent an interesting few hours with the camera and photoshop. I like this result the best but no way can I paint this from life. So do I cheat?

Well if Keith says you can cheat I guess you can ;) Though I don’t think of it as cheating…just a different way of doing things, with different end results.
Generally I’ve found if I try a self-portrait from life I end up with something darker, quicker, less accurate and less self-conscious. When working from photos I’m much more likely to initially pick a nice picture of myself to work from and usually the final drawing will be more accurate.
As to which method produces the best final ‘art’ that’s a tricky one to answer…I’d say more people prefer the ones done from photos, but I think the best self-portrait I’ve done is one I eyeballed late one night…it’s got more soul in it…

I agree with you about drawing from life has more soul. However, for those of you with better vision then me, wearing vari-focal glasses means that the only way I can see close-up is to peer down the bottom half of the lens resulting in a VERY unflattering view of me. I regard my glasses to be a intricate part of my face. So ...
