Sheep may safely graze

I have climbed out of my comfort zone and painted a picture for submission to hang at the new Churchill Hospital Cancer Centre. They are asking amongst other things for "positive and uplifting' and "sensitive to those working in and visiting the building".

My mother was treated for cancer at this hospital so this picture reflects how I felt at his time. She was in safe hands and being looked after. I was thinking of an aria by Bach of this name. The link plays the music and shows an idyllic painting of grazing sheep but for me the hedge allows the sheep to be safe. It is protection.

Visiting 'The Oxford Open'

Sunday lunch time and the 'Modern Art Oxford' gallery was heaving. A lot of people were interested in seeing this eclectic exhibition. I saw on the 'Review Board' in the restaurant that the local papers have publicized the exhibition and its' events but the national papers have given this exhibition a miss.

I think considering how very over subscribed it was the hanging was sympathetic. I was peeved to note that when it suited them they allowed some over-sized pieces. The catalogue only gave the artist's name and that of the work; I would have liked to have the media included. The quality of work, generally, was very good but not brilliant. I have done better but I am still thrilled to show my work. I hope to have another opportunity in the future.

Thumbnails and theory

Nothing to show yet!

I have spent the last few days drawing thumbnails for layout and looking at fonts. This is my project so I can spend the time exploring and learning. I am out-putting to a A4 printer so I am also exploring using collage on larger sheets of paper.

Looking forwards

I am still looking for employment as a full time or regular part-time designer. This lady's needs are taken care of but her wants are expanding. So looking hard at my 'portfolio' I can see that it is top heavy with image work but my design work is sparse and out of date now. The action plan starts with producing a pamphlet that can showcase my skills and strengths and be used in mail shots delivered by me on bicycle to local companies.

It's working title will be 'This is Eynsham'. Budget constraints means that it will be hand made but if I design it to be a "added value" greeting card I may be able to raise the funds to pay for its costs. The image shows the beginning of the design work. You will have to click it to enlarge and read.
