Jim: First Pass
First Pass |
This is the first pass for Jim's portrait. It is on a square 50 cm. canvas and is painted with acrylic paint. When painting in oil you have to keep in mind that you need to paint "fat over lean". This means that each layer of oil paint needs to be painted with more oil. Following this mantra means that your underlayers do not cure at different rates to the top ones and eventually cause cracking. Acrylic paint is very lean and dries with speed. I wanted the background rectangle of red paint to evoke the act of painting with it's texture and edge thinning.
